Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools - NVQ Level 2
We offer a complete career structure for Teaching Assistants mapped against the National Standards. Our 3-day-a-week training programme provides an excellent entry route into an area of education that is rapidly expanding. This is a modular scheme, which offers you the chance to study at a level to suit you. Attendance is arranged to fit in with school hours.
The role of the skilled Teaching Assistant is continually gaining increased recognition. Government initiatives constantly highlight the need for a well-trained workforce of paraprofessionals to work within the classroom and enhance the delivery of lessons by working alongside the class teacher.
The course may be appropriate in a variety of settings e.g. Special Needs Assistant, Cover Supervisor as well as Teaching Assistants.
This NVQ has been developed in line with Local Government National Training Organisations to National Standards and is recognised by LEAs and Head Teachers.
Upon completion of this course, our range of part-time courses then gives students the opportunity to further their professional development, either by opting for courses in more specific subjects such as Dyslexia, Literacy, Numeracy, Makaton, Sign-a-long, Information Communication Technology, or by studying for a qualification at a more advanced level. Advanced courses include; the OCR Certificate for Literacy and Numeracy Support Assistants Level 3, the Foundation Degree in Learning Support and Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools NVQ Level 3 (as a part-time evening course).).
Course Aims
- To give course members an understanding of teaching assistant roles and responsibilities within a variety of learning situations.
- To enable course members to devise learning support strategies, including the use of planning and resources.
- To develop professional skills by discussion and evaluation of the practical application of what is taught.

- Planning and record keeping, including target setting and liaising with others
- Factors which affect learning
- Use of support strategies to promote learning
- Promotion of positive behaviour
- Making and adapting resources to learners needs and capabilities
- Supporting Literacy, Numeracy and ICT (computer) activities in the classroom
- Health and Safety
- Self-Evaluation and review of professional practice

Campus: HCT Hereford and Voluntary Employment Placements, which is an essential part of the course.

Entry Requirements:
No formal entry requirements: However, candidates need to demonstrate a level of maturity in-keeping with the line of work. All applicants will be interviewed by members of the course team prior to acceptance where they will be asked to demonstrate a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy.
